Armor of God-Day 7
In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6: 16
As we learned last time, Christians must be covered, obedient, and prepared to face the battles before us. It is through these disciplines that our minds focus, our flesh settles, and we surrender our will to the Holy Spirit…to His leading and instruction.
The next piece of armor in our arsenal is the shield of faith, which snuffs out the fiery arrows of the devil.
The shield is a defensive piece of armor, usually made from leather and bronze. It was strapped to the soldier’s arm, so he could defend the enemy’s blows or deflect arrows. Shields were solid, heavy, and large enough to cover the soldier with protection.
Likewise, faith in Christ and His blood covers us from attacks of the enemy.
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…Ephesians 2: 8
Faith is a gift from God…but what is it?
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Hebrews 11: 1
Faith is belief that Jesus is who He says He is. We have confidence in the midst of our battles because of our faith in Jesus…in His power to accomplish what He says. Despite circumstances, feelings, or past experiences, we march forward, believing and trusting in the Lord as we go!
Just like the soldier’s, we need to be covered in strong faith, for when our faith is weak, malnourished, or fragile, we can be vulnerable to the enemy’s trap.
But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. Luke 22: 32
Did you catch that? Jesus prayed for Simon Peter, that his faith would not fail…even after Peter denied Christ three times, Peter’s faith in Christ remained. Not only did it remain, but after the humiliation of the denial, Peter’s faith was stronger than before. So even what the enemy means for harm, our Jesus can turn around for our good and His glory!
Questions to Ponder:
What area is your faith not as strong as it should be?
Write out a prayer and ask the Lord to increase your faith in this area. Keep it someplace safe so you can refer back to it often and praise God when He answers it!
