Armor of God-Day 2
Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist…Ephesians 6: 14a
Welcome back to our next look at the armor of God. Yesterday, we learned that the battles we fight are not against flesh and blood, but against the enemy of our souls…Satan and his spiritual forces. For protection we must don all the armor, not just certain pieces, in order to stand firm against our adversary. Today, we will look at the belt of truth and what it “holds” (see what I did there!) for us.
Belts are a basic, mundane article of clothing. Functional and practical, their importance can easily be overlooked. During the time Paul wrote the letter to the Ephesians, belts were essential. They held the soldier’s sheath for the sword and protected his loins. If the belt were not in place, the soldier’s movements could be hindered and he could suffer greatly, even mortally.
The belt is a foundational part of a soldier’s armor. It holds in place both the undergarments and the armor. It provides a spot for the sword and holds the breastplate.
The belt of truth is foundational for us as well.
I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Him. John 14:6
Just as we wrap a belt around our waist, we must wrap ourselves in the Truth of who Christ is and who we are in Him. This Truth covers us, protects us, and shields us.
So in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. Galatians 3: 26-27
We become vulnerable to enemy attack when we lay down our belt of Truth. If we choose to go into battle without our Truth belt, then when the enemy attacks with lies, we will succumb and lose our ground.
He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. John 8:44
We must engage in the battle with the Truth…running everything we hear through the Truth of God’s word. We must actively filter words, feelings, and circumstances through the filter of God’s Truth. Even those with the word of God, without the belt of Truth, can come to believe bogus and dangerous blasphemy.
Questions to Ponder:
How can you put on the belt of truth today?
What are some lies that you have let slip past the belt of truth?
How can the truth of God’s word set you free from those lies?
