Text: Matthew 28:16-20
As we saw over the last 40 days of our study, Jesus came for many reasons. The biggest reason, yes, was to die for us so that we may live but did you see how many other reasons there were? He used His entire life here on earth to heal, to serve, to teach, to love, to train disciples to go make more disciples. He came for us! His entire reason for coming was to save each wretched sinner. And His purpose for staying for 33 years was to teach us how to reach more with the truth of His gospel.
Have you ever stopped to think that Jesus could simply have come as a grown man, lets say 33 years old? He could, as the son of God, say, “There is no reason to live 33 years on earth, I’ll just come all grown up and get this crucifixion thing over with.” But He didn’t! He came as a baby just as the prophets foretold he would. He came and lived a humble, mostly meager life. He was the son a of carpenter. That wasn’t a big deal back then! No one really noticed Him as anything more than Joseph’s son. Yet, He was the son of God and Mary and Joseph knew this from the beginning.
And while he came for all the reasons we spoke of over this study, His final words to us here on earth are SO significant! “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.”
We refer to this passage as the Great Commission. And that is exactly what it is! It is Jesus Christ, Himself, son of God, commanding us to go out and tell the world about the salvation they receive through Him. We have been instructed to share the Good News of the Gospel. We have been commanded to not keep silent! We have been given the truth and it is our Commission from our Lord to go and make disciples, to baptize them, to teach them and to send them out to make more disciples! Did you get all that? It is our job!
We don’t get to choose whether we do this or not. In all honesty, we choose everyday not to share the name of Jesus…so it actually has become a choice for us. But according to Jesus’, it is not a choice, it is a command from Him. So are we following His commands? Are we going about the Father’s business as Jesus did in Luke 2?
Jesus came to commission us to tell others of His great name and His saving power! Let’s not be the generation that disobeys that command!
